You Can Be Part of the Solution! Start a Community Garden!!!

Growing your own produce is the perfect way to make sure your family has healthy-and affordable-food. However, not everyone has a big backyard to grow this produce in. The perfect solution? Community gardening!

Community gardens are a great way to accomplish a number of goals:
  • Build relationships with your neighbors
  • Grow organic, healthy food (and/or beautiful plants!) for your family.
  • Food sharing! If you grow more than you can eat, just have a produce swap with your fellow gardeners so you can each grow different foods and enjoy them all!
  • Community service: Your garden can donate food to local shelters or food banks, have children's programs to teach kids the importance and FUN of growing their own food
  • Family time: This is a great way to spend time together. You can grow your own food, then harvest it, cook it and eat it together as a family. Good bonding time!
Here is a GREAT resource for finding a community garden to join or starting your own! It's called the American Community Gardening Association. My favorite part of this website is all the tips they give about advocating to keep your community garden and even starting your own (unfortunately there are some hoops to jump through to get this kind of thing up and running). They even have an annual conference!

So go check it out and feel free to share any other resources you know of related to community gardening. Thanks!
