YouTube is a Wonderful Thing

The first piece of advice I would give to anyone who is pregnant would be to spend hours and hours on YouTube, watching births. Search Hypnobabies, home birth, and/or water birth. It is so inspiring to watch women bringing their babies into the world in such a beautiful way. I think it's important for first time mothers especially to spend time watching women give birth because the idea of childbirth can be very scary. The unknown is always scary. If you've ever watched women give birth on TV shows like 'A Baby Story' or '16 and Pregnant', you may notice some big differences when you watch the home births (and Hypnobabies and water births) on YouTube. Just prepare yourself for a lot of naked pregnant women.

Also, if you've never seen a hospital birth or a cesarean section, you might want to search those too, just so you can see the differences (and similarities).

Here's an example of a woman giving birth and using Hypnobabies (more on Hypnobabies to come). This one isn't very graphic. No nudity, so don't be scared:-) You'll notice some words she uses like "pressure waves" and "center switch". Pressure waves are referring to contractions. With Hypnobabies, a lot of terminology is different because of the way the words affect our attitudes.
For example, the word "contraction" has sort of a negative connotation to it. It makes us think of tensing up, which increases our perception of pain. Instead, Hypnobabies uses "pressure wave" to help you stay present and just "ride the wave", per se.
"Center switch" is referring to her hypnosis. Not interacting with the outside world, but not completely focused inside yourself like you would be while pushing or in transition.

If you're interested in learning more about Hypnobabies, you can go to their website. I would encourage you to follow their blog, they always have really inspiring birth stories from mom's who've used Hypnobabies . I'll also have another post about Hypnobabies coming soon!
